This is a stop-motion puppet of the creature "Brown Jenkin" from H P Lovecraft's short story "The Dreams in the Witch House". He is thusly described in the text: "Witnesses said it had long hair and the shape of a rat, but that its sharp-toothed, bearded face was evilly human while its paws were like tiny human hands. It took messages betwixt old Keziah and the devil, and was nursed on the witch's blood, which it sucked like a vampire. Its voice was a kind of loathsome titter, and it could speak all languages." Here's the finished film on YouTube: [link]
hmmm i say its a miss understood monkey.prahaps it did drink blood like a vamper bat. mor over if it could mimic sounds like a paret it would seem able to speek. cool cripted man
He's yet another strange monster dreamed up by Lovecraft. But he's still more accessible than most of his other creatures, that are often described very fleetingly, and as combinations of so many different impressions.
Excellent!! In many other films I've felt that mixing stop motion with live action wasn't very successful because they have a different look/feel, but in this one it really works well because Brown Jenkin is not your typical earthly creature, the stop motion effect helps it look otherworldly. Great model build, too!
A few years back I was in northern Vermont and stumbled across 'Brown & Jenkin's coffee', I went in to surely meet some Lovecraft fans. But, they knew nothing of the story and had purchased the store from two people (a Brown and a Jenkins, coincidentally). I felt a little bad to reveal what a loathsome creature their store was accidentally named after:
Thanks! I'm just an amateur filmmaker and animator, but I do try to make the best effort I can. Still, what comes out after I've done my best is what it is. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Funny story about Brown & Jenkins! Coincidence plays strange tricks on us.
