Tom Bombadil part 1 by Loneanimator Tom Bombadil part 1 by Loneanimator
For those of you who haven't read this poem; please do -It's very good! But I thought I'd treat you to a synopsis, hoping I'm not violating any copyrights.

Tom Bombadil is out for a stroll along the river, when Goldberry, the River-woman's daughter, grabs him by the hair and pulls him into the water.

Thanks! They're perennial favourites with me too. I really love Tolkien's Bombadil poems.

Tom Bombadil is the single greatest character in existence, period.

Very well done on this image xD

Tom is awesome. Even though his appearance in LOTR was short, he was one of my favorite characters. :D I love his expression. 'o'

Thanks! I really like him too, among other things because he is such a rare character. We don't know that much about him, and we're not supposed to. Please read his poem, if you haven't!

Well, so was I. I have a friend who looks like Tom, with a big red beard and all. We've been talking about doing a home movie about the Adventures of Tom Bombadil, and posting it on YouTube. But we would probably be sued penniless if we did it. :(

agh copyright infringment, just sapping the fun out of everything. well i spose tom kind of belonged to the slower paced side of the fellowship... *sigh*

i dont know if they can sue if you dont make money out of it. can they?

I believe they can sue if they feel that my adaptation has degraded their original material in some way. Of course, now the Tolkien Estate is very busy suing New Line Cinema, Metro Goldwyn Meyer and maybe a few others. Maybe they just wouldn't notice.
I already did this one, from a Tolkien poem:

well if you did it as well and with as much care as that then they would probably congradulate you. or at least not get thier lawyers all excited.
you captured the mood perfectly there! i was silly enough to watch it before reading the poem so i dont have my own image of them but the character design is really cool. impressed

Thanks for liking my little film! You never know how people will react to fan art, but the Tolkien Estate maintains a pretty firm line against all unauthorized interpretations. Colin Rudd, who wrote the music, prepared material for an entire CD of Tolkien songs. Initially the Tolkien Estate was very approving of what he did. Then all of a sudden their lawyers told him to abort the project. He has instead posted his songs on YouTube, where they're very appreciated.

hmmm it sounds like the lawyers probably work more or less independently from the estate itself to just stop any use of material.

From what I've heard, it's the Tolkien family themselves that are very restrictive. But once J R R Tolkien expressed a hope that his stories would enter the realm of myth, and that other artist would be inspired to expand on what he did. The concept of that great shared mythology may not have been a reality when "The Lord of the Rings" was first published, but, by God, it certainly is now. I'd say Tolkien's ideas and imagination have grown out of the hands of any copyright holders. I'd say it falls to the love of us fans to do his work real justice, without any thoughts of any profit besides the shared joy of the finished result. I'll go so far as to say that some fan efforts help make up the perception of LOTR et al, for some of us. The fan efforts help make this a phenomenon, and I'm surprised this fact is not acknowledged.
